GMonE

GMonE (Global Monitoring Environment) is a set of services designed to work together and intended to provide a whole network-based monitoring infrastructure for a large-scale environment. Its main characteristics are:

  • It provides an efficient access to information, considering response times and data size.
  • It coordinates monitored information from the whole environment, providing a unified interface for management and queries.
  • It performs statistical pre-processing of the monitored data.

GMonE is a standalone Java tool that can run and work on any network computing environment in an independent way.

GMonE capabilities

Because the system is designed to provide information from the whole system, its services should be spread throughout the entire infrastructure. They have to be designed to cooperate in order to obtain and manage the monitored data. From this point of view, the tasks performed by GMonE are:

  1. Obtaining the raw monitored data: It provides monitoring parameters like:
    • Disk capacity: the total amount of space available for storing data.
    • Workload: the average percentage of use of the resource.
    • I/O bandwidth: the effective I/O bandwidth obtained while performing I/O operations by means of a file system inside a storage resource. Each storage resource is seen as a single entity, that is, if it is composed of several nodes and the access is performed in parallel, then I will be the result of accessing all the nodes working together.
    • Network bandwidth and latency: the effective network bandwidth and its corresponding latency obtained while performing operations from an external element (e.g., through the Internet or WAN).
    • Availability: this parameter indicates if the resoruce is working or not.
  2. Monitored data aggregation: Since most of grid are clusters, an abstraction phase of the internal details of each cluster aggregating data in a single entity makes the system understanding easy.
  3. Gathering and managing the monitored data. Once the monitored information has been obtained, it is necessary to gather and manage it, in order to provide a single system image of the whole system. This means to collect the monitored information from each element and store it in its own database.
  4. Providing the post-processed monitored data: It provides a common interface to access monitored data and administer the GMonE system.
